Carola Syz Sarzi-Amade, originally from Rome, lives and works in London. She studied Art (Liceo ArtisticoSant’ Orsola) and Modern Languages and Litterature (Universita La Sapienza) in Rome and later Video Documentary and Drama (Westminster College) and Photography (Kensington & Chelsea College) in London.

Carola has travelled extensively, particularly to countries in the Far East, Asia and North Africa including India, Vietnam, Morocco and China. She draws her inspiration from the rich colours and exotic beauty she finds there. She creates abstract photographic compositions, taking everyday objects and capturing their own unique perspective. Through her photographic work she deconstructs and transforms them into fantasy shapes and abstract images.

Carola is also a portrait photographer and currently working on a book project on Indian Contemporary Artists’ Studios.

Art/Space India aims to comprise of more than 100 images of both established and emerging artists. From Delhi and Mumbai to Baroda, the project will span the length and breadth of India. Page after page of uninterrupted images will show the diversity and creativity within India’s contemporary art scene and will show contemporary Indian artists in their workspaces.

With her passion for India she has travelled extensively around India for several years. She has created several photographic series which portray different facets of the Indian culture. Narlai (Rajasthan) Portraits and Details, 2005. Mudras, 2010.

Last year Carola exhibited at the Nehru Centre in London, a body of her works which she produced, curated and exhibited and was a success. Her next show at the Nehru Centre will take place in October 2011. Carola has exhibited her work extensively in UK and Europe. Among her exhibitions are Galleria Antonacci, Rome, European Commission, London, The Nehru Centre, London, Italian Embassy, London.

Carola created the series Mudras in New Delhi, India.Mudras are symbolic hand positions which have been in use in the East for thousands of years. They are used as a spiritual practice and to influence the energies in the body and the mind. From her birth in Rome, Carola’s artistic development was inspired by Michelangelo and Caravaggio’s works in the Roman churches and the Vatican. She was later exposed to a world of strong sensual sensations in India where her artistic concept and philosophical thoughts found a natural evolution. This work is a meditation where the hand figures merge with the design in the alabaster and become one. The viewer is drawn to these images, his mind absorbed into the light and grabbed by the sensuality and warmness of Mudras. -
